Duties:

Under limited direction and within the standards for positions at this level:

  1. Be responsible for the provision of statistical information on DVA clients and the veteran community, as requested by internal and external clients or as part of regular publications. In particular, ensure the accuracy, correcteness, consistency and completeness of the statistical information provided.

  2. Maintain and develop systems and procedures for collecting, processing, analysing and presenting relevant statistical information.

  3. Ensure that quality service is provided to the Statistical Information sub-section’s clients. In particular, liaise regularly with departmental users in order to amend relevant publications in line with evolving business requirements.

  4. Apply the principles of Workplace Diversity, OH&S and participative work practices.


SELECTION CRITERIA

IMPORTANT


1. Relevant experience in the collection, analysis and interpretation of statistical information. Commitment to continuous improvement of relevant processes.


2. Sound interpersonal skills, including communication and presentation skills, and commitment to client service.


  1. High degree of analytical ability, preferably demonstrated in statistical work.


4. Experience with mainframe and PC applications of the kind used in DVA for statistical work. In particular, proficiency with MS Access and Excel, and knowledge of PC & Mainframe SAS.


  1. Capacity for teamwork and personal flexibility.


  1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principle and practices of Workplace Diversity, OH&S and participative work practices, and an ability to apply them to work practices.


LESS IMPORTANT

Understanding of the data structure in DVA’s client database and use of the data retrieval system (AIS2000, Ad-hoc Information System).

An understanding of the Department’s business rules (related to the Veterans Entitlement Act).

An understanding of the Department’s current Management Information systems and future trends.

JOB DESCRIPTION



The occupant of this position works under the supervision of an Executive Level 1, and is part of a small team of other APS 6 DVA Band 2 in the Statistical Information sub-Section, one of three sub-sections within the Business Information Section.

The Business Information Section is part of the Strategic Support Branch and is responsible for developing and delivering a range of statistical products and services, including demographic modelling and projections, mapping, geographical and business analysis and performance management reporting. The main clients are staff in the Department’s National Office and State Offices and the Minister’s Office. Other clients include APS agencies and representatives of the veteran community.

The statistical information provided by the sub-Section relates mainly to the Department’s current clients, notably those receiving pensions and associated benefits and health treatment cards. In addition to specific requests for client statistics, a number of publications are produced covering pension beneficiaries, treatment card holders, as well as hospital and medical services statistics.

The person required to deliver successfully on the sub-Section’s statistical output should be client-focussed with a high level of analytical skills and an a background statistical work. The person should also have the ability to develop and implement quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy timeliness and relevance of statistical information. The occupant will be responsible for:

  1. Assisting in identifing and developing the information sources needed to meet the sub-Section’s current and future information needs

  2. Assisting in maintaining and improving the quality of statistical services provided by the sub-Section, including the appropriate storage and retrieval of statistical information

  3. Answering requests for client related statistical information

  4. Providing analyses and interpretation of statistical information

  5. Liaising with the Information Management Unit to ensure the integrity of statistical output.
